Just off I-90 in the small town of Alberton, Mont., the Ghost Rails Inn is located in the Clark Fork River Valley in Alberton, Mont., 30 miles west of Missoula. The inn is nestled against the backdrop of the Bitterroot Mountains, one-half mile from the Clark Fork River, which offers fishing and whitewater rafting.
Ghost Rails Inn is a historic railroad inn built circa 1909 as a Milwaukee Road railroad crew-change hotel. A major renovation in 1992 converted it to a modern country inn with early 1900s ambience. The lobby offers a crackling fire in the fireplace, and the cheerful dining room is the setting for old-fashioned, home-cooked meals and rousing late-night games of Uno, cribbage, and Monopoly. Complimentary full country breakfasts are often accompanied by live harp music. In the afternoon, homemade brownies, cakes, lemonade and other snacks available.
Guestrooms at the Ghost Rails Inn are dressed in colorful quilts, and equipped with cable television and high-speed Internet access. Most of the 10 rooms are located on the second floor of the inn, but some first-floor rooms are available. Economy guestrooms offer shared bathrooms, and standard rooms feature private bathrooms.
